" Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant" (Jonah 4, 6)
Jonah cannot stand the fact that his mission was successful and he became unreliable - therefore he leaves the city. But there are higher values than the fulfillment of prophecy and the reliability of the prophet - saving god's creation, if they are found worthy of rescue.
I recalled a song by the singer Shuli Nathan, with which I identify: "Give me the complete tranquility concerning things that I cannot change. Please give me the courage to change things in my power and please give me the wisdom to distinguish between these and those".
" וַיְמַן יְהוָה-אֱלֹהִים קִיקָיוֹן וַיַּעַל מֵעַל לְיוֹנָה לִהְיוֹת צֵל עַל-רֹאשׁוֹ לְהַצִּיל לוֹ מֵרָעָתוֹ וַיִּשְׂמַח יוֹנָה עַל-הַקִּיקָיוֹן שִׂמְחָה גְדוֹלָה" (יונה ד' 6)
יונה אינו יכול לסבול את העובדה כי שליחותו הצליחה והוא הפך לבלתי-אמין ולכן הוא יוצא מן העיר. אך ישנם ערכים נעלים יותר מאשר התגשמותה של נבואה ומהימנותו של הנביא – הצלת מעשה ידיו של הקב"ה, אם אכן יימצאו אלה ראויים להצלה. באותו עניין, וכדי להדגיש נקודה זו, נזכרתי בשיר בביצועה של הזמרת שולי נתן, אתו אני מזדהה: "אלוהים תן לי את השלוה להשלים עם שאיני יכול לשנות. אנא תן לי את אומץ הלב לשנות דברים שביכולתי ואנא תן לי את החוכמה להבחין בין אלה לבין אלה".
