"When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live”." (Jonah 4, 8) This is the second time that Yona claims: "It would be better for me to die than to live" and for the hundredth time I repeat, ""It would be better for me to live than to die". A few years ago I created an art work dealing with the whole and the broken. In this work one can see the complete tablets of the Covenant and on the other side the broken tablets. The work emphasizes the fact that in every person there is a break and the pursuit of perfection is neither realistic nor intelligent -

" Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant" (Jonah 4, 6) Jonah cannot stand the fact that his mission was successful and he became unreliable - therefore he leaves the city. But there are higher values than the fulfillment of prophecy and the reliability of the prophet - saving god's creation, if they are found worthy of rescue.
