"Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard" (Jonah 1,15)
Although Jonah is asking "Pick me up and throw me into the sea" - In other words, give up on me, leave me alone, throw me to the sea - the people attempt to save him with all their might, and avoid throwing him into the water. This story fills me with gratitude, thankfulness, appreciation, and genuine appeal to all the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff of the pediatric Hemato-Oncology Department at the Ruth Rappaport Hospital at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. It is ostensibly their job to try to save lives but the concern with which things are done is extraordinary in the reality of our lives.
Here is a small story that will illustrate this well: About a year and a half after the end of Nadav's treatments, I met by accident Prof. Miriam Ben-Harush, director of the Hemato-Oncology Department and the General Manager of the Ruth Rappaport Children's Hospital. Prof. Ben-Harush was interested in Nadav's health and when I told her about the difficulty in finding a specialist to solve a newly discovered problems, she asked spontaneously, "Do you want me to schedule an appointment with Prof. XXXXX?" - she said and did. That very day she called me personally and with a message that a special appointment had been arranged for Nadav. That is not to mention that during the long hospitalization and treatment of Nadav, from the head of the doctors to the last of the janitors, we received only caring, empathy and kindness.
"וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת-יוֹנָה וַיְטִלֻהוּ אֶל-הַיָּם וַיַּעֲמֹד הַיָּם מִזַּעְפּוֹ" (יונה א' 15)
אף על פי שׁיוֹנה מבקשׁ "שָׂאוּנִי וַהֲטִילֻנִי אֶל-הַיָּם" כלומר - התייאשׁוּ ממני, עִזְבוּ אוֹתי, זִרְקוּ אוֹתי אל הים, מנסים האנשׁים להצילוֹ בכל מאוֹדם ולא להשׁליכוֹ הַיָּמָה. סיפּוּר זה ממלא אוֹתי בהכרת הטוֹב, תּוֹדה, הערכה וְהוֹקרה אמיתית לכל הרוֹפאים, האחיוֹת ואנשי הצוות המוּפלאים במחלקה ההמטו-אונקולוגית ילדים בביה"ח ע"ש רות רפופורט אשר בקריה הרפואית של רמב"ם בחיפה. לכאורה מתפקידם הוא לנסות ולהציל חיים, אולם הצורה והאיכפתיות בה נעשים הדברים הם-הם יוצאי הדופן במציאות חיינו.
הנה סיפור קטן שימחיש זאת היטב: כשנה וחצי לאחר תום הטיפולים שעבר נדב, פגשתי באקראי את הפרופ' מרים בן-הרוש, מנהלת המחלקה ההמטו-אונקולוגית ובמקביל גם המנהלת הכללית של ביה"ח לילדים ע"ש רות רפופורט. פרופ' בן-הרוש התעניינה בשלומו של נדב וכשסיפרתי לה על הקושי במציאת רופא מומחה לפתרון בעיות כלשהן שהתגלו אצלו, שאלה היא בספונטניות - "את רוצה שאקבע לו תור אצל פרופ' XXXXX?" – אמרה ועשתה. עוד באותו היום צלצלה היא אלי, באופן אישי ובִשְׂרָה כי נקבע תור מיוחד לנדב. גם תוֹך כדי הטיפוּּל והאשׁפוז הממוּשׁך שׁל נדב, מראשׁון הרוֹפאים ועד אחרוֹן המנקים קיבלנוּ רק אכפתיוּת, אוֹפטימיוּת וטוּב-לב.
